Maria Cantwell: The Senator from Windfall
In a new article posted on Tech Central Station by James K. Glassman, Glassman discusses US Senator Maria Cantwell?s grandstanding on oil company profits.
Maria Cantwell is the last person who should be attacking corporate profits. Cantwell was recruited to Real Networks in the 1990?s after losing her reelection bid to Congress. Thanks to the tech stock boom, Cantwell was able to accumulate substantial wealth. It was this fortune that ultimately opened the door for her to run for the Senate.
As Glassman concludes: ?Maria Cantwell is truly the Senator From Windfall, but I wouldn't want to slap some kind of special tax on her just because she got a bit lucky.?

Cantwell Feeling Heat from her Liberal Base
On October 10, 2005 Maria Cantwell, along with 38 of her Democratic colleagues presented a signed letter to President Bush, urging him to ?change the course? in regards to the current war in Iraq.? The letter, highlighted on the State Democratic Party?s web page, is the latest attempt by Cantwell to appeal to her liberal base angry with her support for the war. Maria Cantwell voted for the Iraq war and has supported every congressional appropriation for the war. As recently as this August, a spokesperson for Cantwell vehemently asserted that the Senator continues to support the war. (Vancouver Columbian, August 8, 2005.)
The letter comes after a recent meeting Cantwell had with her Seattle core supporters, during which they expressed their unhappiness with her ongoing support of the war. For the time being, it seems that Cantwell has caved in to their pressure.
Washington deserves a senator that can take a stance on tough issues and won't change it based on his or hers electoral interest.
Cantwell votes against Roberts
Despite garnering widespread support from both Democrats and Republicans, Maria Cantwell voted against the confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Washington's other Senator, Patty Murray, voted for Roberts). The vote proves that Cantwell is catering to her extremist liberal base, which has openly criticized her for her stances in the past.
Despite here campaign claim to be an "independent voice," Cantwell has proven to be another one of Howard Dean's angry liberal minions.
